How Your Community Benefits

The I-95/GIR project presents an opportunity to improve the quality of life in the neighborhoods located in proximity to the interstate, enhance access to the Delaware River waterfront and rebuild sections of Richmond Street and Delaware Avenue for the benefit of pedestrian and vehicular traffic.

Specifically, your community will get

  • Better and more energy efficient lighting for better aesthetics and better security,
  • Safer pedestrian crossings on Delaware Avenue and Richmond Street,
  • More convenient access to the waterfront and Penn Treaty Park,
  • More trees and green space,
  • Improved traffic flow on surface streets,
  • More effective and environmentally friendly storm water management,
  • Rejuvenation of local businesses,
  • More opportunities for public art and artists,
  • Opportunities to tell and show neighborhood history.

Some of these benefits already are on their way to becoming a reality. A number of these sustainable actions have been designed and will be built under the GR1 phase of the project that goes to construction in 2011, including improvements to Richmond Street and the Conrail Bridges that span it.

Planning for additional sustainable actions for subsequent sections of I-95/GIR continues. Many decisions on potential enhancements will be made in the months ahead as we move forward, so your continuing involvement is important.
