Who is heading the initiative for ground-level improvements for the I-95/GIR projects?

PennDOT has assembled a Sustainable Action Committee to integrate ground-level improvements into the various phases of the I-95/GIR project.

Where are the I-95/GIR improvements being done?

Overall improvements under the GIR projects will stretch from Ann Street to Race Street.

What is the time frame for the various I-95/GIR projects?

The first phase of the project, I-95/GR1, which includes improvements to Richmond Street and the Conrail Bridges over Richmond Street, goes to construction in 2011. Each subsequent stage (GR 2 through GR5) is expected to go to construction as each previous stage is completed.

How much will these sustainable actions cost?

Though there are no estimates available yet for the proposed sustainable actions for the I-95/GIR project, the cost of any enhancements will be extremely modest considering the overall cost of the project, which is pegged at between $700 million and $1 billion.

What types of ground-level improvements are being proposed?

Sustainable actions for the I-95/GIR project include improvements to the appearance of bridges and walls, landscaping, streetscaping, decorative lighting, street lighting and public art.  All will be considered for inclusion as each location suggests.

How can an individual become involved in this sustainable actions initiative?

The Sustainable Action Committee (SAC) includes groups representing virtually every aspect of community life. These representatives attend meetings, participate in design workshops (charettes) and help decide which initiatives to consider for inclusion in each phase of the project. We suggest that you contact one of these groups to see how you can help.
