Girard Avenue Interchange At-a-Glance

What is the Sustainable Action Committee?
Recognizing that rebuilding I-95 offers opportunities for improving access to the waterfront and enhancing the quality of life in nearby neighborhoods, PennDOT, along with stakeholders representing city agencies, the community and a variety of businesses and non-profit organizations, is participating in ongoing planning efforts along the Delaware River.

To streamline this coordinated effort, PennDOT has created a Sustainable Action Committee (SAC) to identify relevant, appropriate and affordable waterfront and community projects that can be incorporated into the plans for each of the five construction stages of I-95/GIR.

Since its creation in mid-2010, the SAC, which includes representatives from community groups in the project area, has identified a number of initiatives that will  be constructed under I-95/GR1 beginning in 2011. This website is dedicated to providing you with insight into the process of developing these sustainable actions.

The SAC will continue to explore additional enhancements for inclusion in subsequent phases of I-95/GIR, as well as enhancements to be included in the four other major projects to rebuild and improve I-95, its bridges and its interchanges in Philadelphia north of Center City (I-95/AFC, I-95/BRI, I-95/BSR, I-95/CPR).

Overview of I-95/GIR
  • I-95/GIR is one of PennDOT's five major projects to rebuild Interstate 95, its bridges and interchanges north of Center City Philadelphia.
  • I-95/GIR will focus on reconstructing the Girard Avenue Interchange, rebuilding the adjoining sections of I-95 and revitalizing the I-95 corridor along the Delaware River waterfront with ground-level enhancements.
  • I-95/GIR is comprised of five separate construction contracts, or sections: GR1 through GR5.
