A New I-95 Starts With You
People from neighborhoods along I-95 are working together to transform the underside of I-95 into inviting and useful spaces that will last for generations.
Community planners, residents, artists and business men and women have joined with like-minded professionals from the public sector to pursue a shared dream of transforming the underside of I-95 into inviting, accessible and animated spaces.
To that end, PennDOT has formed a Sustainable Action Committee (SAC) to guide a transformation that will improve the highway as well as its relationship to the neighborhood and the waterfront below. Charged with keeping it simple, affordable and in balance with the environment, the committee is using a palette of air, light and color to create a human-scaled environment of streetscapes, wall treatments and decorative lighting around and under I-95 that will connect people from Philadelphia’s river wards to the Delaware River waterfront.
